T h e first excerpt from Eusebius engages in what we might call competitive history. It presents an account o f the exodus imder Moses in a way that "competes" with other negative portrayals by other historians. ^5 On the Contemplative Life implies at its beginning that it follows a treatise discussing the Essenes {Contempl 1). This previous volume was either (1) the Hypo- thetica (see below), (2) the treatise That Every Good Person Is Free, or (3) an entirely different work that is lost. While On the Contemplative Life clearly deals with those who pursue a life o f contemplation, the treatise that preceded it presented the Essenes as a consummate example o f the active life.

Here we find the fine line Philo walks between particularism and universalism. O n the one hand, he rails against ethnic Jews who would stop the practice o f literal circumcision. O n the other hand, he could consider nonJews to be "circumcised" without proselyle: A convert from one reli^on to another. converting to Judaism if they had curbed their passions. Philo s views on intermarriage with non-Jews seem to reflect the same tension: he upholds Jewish practice while opening the door to non-Jews.
