Traditionally, teacher education programs have contributed to this problem by not significantly troubling the ways that dominating views and practices of “good” teachers contribute to oppression and hinder anti-oppressive change. Teacher educators have not always agreed with the public: In recent years in the United States, ballot initiatives and governmental dictates have increasingly attempted to prescribe only certain approaches to teacher education as a way to ensure that “good” teachers are produced, and many teacher educators have protested and resisted such dictates for being oppressive (leading them to be criti1 2 y Against Common Sense cized for being “out of touch” with the public).

There is not a best practice for teaching, just as there is not a best method for doing research. Any practice or method is necessarily partial. Anti-oppressive research is not unlike anti-oppressive teaching. Both are paradoxical (where teachers both make use of and problematize something), and both are partial, in both senses of the word. Like teaching, which can never lead to being fully learned, research is never complete, which means the researcher needs to continue researching even while troubling what was just concluded.
